The Scientific Council of the Institute is a joint organ of management. It includes 23 leading scientists. The scientific associates of the Institute elect its members for a 5 year term.
The Chairman of the Scientific Council is Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Professor V.A. Rumyantsev.
The Scientific Secretary of the Council is Ph.D. in Geography L.V. Sergeeva.
Activity of the Scientific Council is carried out according to Charter of Institute of Limnology RAS.

The sessions of Scientific Council conduct routinely (on 5-6 sessions annually). On these sessions are considered:
- The principle questions of scientific and scientific - organizational activity;
- The programs and plans of research works and their practical realization;
- Scientific reports and messages on actual problems of scientific development;
- Legislative initiatives of the Institute on nature protection subjects;
- Reports on contractual works;
- Plans of publishing activities;
- Election of editors-in-chief and structure of editorial boards of the editions authorized by Institute;
- Plans of training of the scientific specialists;

- The approval of the themes of candidate and doctor's dissertation;

Recommendation for participation in concours on award of scientists and honorary titles, the state scientific grants, etc.
Resulting thematic sessions of the Scientific Council are annually carried out for discussion of reports on scientific activity of thematic groups and divisions of the Institute.
The Scientific Council plays an active role in formation of scientific ideology of the Institute, its creative and personnel potential.
